Theatre trip turns bloody...

Dated: 3 December 2018

Last week, many of our biology students (particularly those that are interested in studying medicine) were fortunate enough to have a visit from Operating Theatre Live - a travelling operating theatre experience for students.

The Operating Theatre Live team are specialised in human anatomy and they delivered a programme where they explained the various aspects of anatomy, in an engaging way allowing students to explore through dissection of specimens.

They also ran them through surgical procedures, infection control, how to prepare anaesthetics and talked about the  bedside manners needed to become successful doctors, dentists, vets and healthcare practitioners.

Student Neha Thakkar said “I found it beneficial to find out how fast paced medical learning is and how you must always be switched on to absorb as much information as you can.”

Fellow A level biologist Edward Bickers said "I loved it, especially the fact that the experience was so informative as well as fun."

Alex Warwick agreed “I really enjoyed the workshop and thought that it was incredibly useful.”

The purpose of this workshop was for the students to learn aspects of their A level biology course with the chance to practice their dissection skills and learn about what goes on in operating theatres. This should inspire them and give them a realistic insight into a career in medicine or related healthcare, but also a very significant addition to their personal statements when they apply to universities.

In 2018, 29 of our graduating A level students went on to study medicine at prestigious universities.
