Student of the Week
A very special item this week, to coincide with leavers day, Student of the Week is also our Student of the Year.
Tal came to Woodhouse from JFS Brent and is studying English literature, classics and French. She's had offers from Sussex, York, Southampton and Exeter universities to study English Literature... but doesn't intend taking any of them. Tal has bigger plans...
Anyone who knows Tal, knows that photography is her passion, and fast overtaking that is film-making. She is planning to spend time on her portfolio and applying to film schools.
"I'm looking at Chicago, LA, Amsterdam - everywhere really. There are a lot of scholarships abroad for film and hopefully I can build up a body of work that gets me on one. I have been working as a runner on lots of shoots, I've been a production stills photographer, produced some of my own films and have a website I'm working on. I want to make films that are visually breathtaking but address the inner turmoil of the human condition - I want to film ideas that stay with you long after you've seen them"
In her time at Woodhouse, Tal has achieved an incredible amount. She's been an active member of the college council and served as a student governor. She's been involved in almost every event - from the Valentines 'Wall of Love" to Easter egg hunts - from candy canes and raffles to charity drives and photography competitions. She has been a keen member of our FemSoc and last year took part in 'Debating Matters' at UCL. She has quite literally thrown herself into Woodhouse life.
"When I first came here I thought I'd get involved with the council because it might be good for my CV, but when people started to like and enjoy stuff I was doing - it felt good. I became really invested in the role. I love combining my creativity with college stuff and Woodhouse has given me an outlet for skills I might not have used in my subject areas.
Also, the openness of Woodhouse has really benefited me. Here, we really embrace diversity and that's given me confidence in myself. Two years ago I would never have thought I could attempt public speaking and now I do it all the time.
I've wanted to be here since year ten (Tal came to an open day with her older brother) but didn't ever expect that I would be able to make an impact on college life. Now Woodhouse is a massive part of me and has coloured my expectations for university and the future."
Outside of Woodhouse - alongside all of her film work - Tal has just got a job at Krispy Kreme - "That has made me so popular it's ridiculous." She's also been playing the piano since her early years (classical and blues) and if all of that were not enough - she's making her own prom dress. "I also sew... It's going to be electric!" - Watch this space...
Tal's nominators were many, but among her biggest supporters is our Principal John Rubinstein, who had this to say...
"Tal has been such a consistently brilliant Woodhouse student in her two years. As a student governor she has represented the student voice articulately to the governing body and lead the college council by example - giving up her free time to make sure every event is a success. She also made a great speech at open day to hundreds of parents - a very brave thing to take on.
She is someone who has really developed at Woodhouse. Someone who has enjoyed the community and taken advantage of all the opportunities we have to offer. She started here as a shy girl who didn't know anybody - but leaves as a real leader, who has the affection and respect of the entire Woodhouse community."
We hope this celebration rounds off your Woodhouse experience perfectly Tal and wish you every success in your future. We hereby crown you - Student of the Year 2015!
