Student of the Week

Luca Sinnott
Luca Sinnott
This week we welcome a relative newcomer to SOTW, Luca Sinnott, 16, from North Finchley, who came to us in September from Finchley Catholic High School. Luca is studying AS English literature, mathematics, law and politics.

Luca is a swimmer, and like SOTW Karis Fuller last year, swims for Barnet Copthall Swimming Club.

"I started swimming seriously when I was 12 years old and have been training constantly for the last four or five years. I train 8 times a week (five evening sessions and three morning) and compete in the 200m butterfly. I've competed in the UK nationals very year for the past four years and last year won a bronze medal - 3rd in the UK - which I'm very proud of. Our coaches are great and they believe in me as much as I do and that helps my confidence even more. My ambition is to represent Team GB in any competition but obviously my age means I should be getting near my peak ability around the time of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and that's the big goal to work towards. But sooner than that I have my eyes on next years nationals and maybe the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 but I may still be a bit young for that, we'll see.

After Woodhouse I'm hoping to gain a sports scholarship to one of the big universities in the USA, maybe somewhere hot like Florida, so as well as my A levels I'm also preparing to sit the US SATS exams in December.

My whole life is pretty much swim, eat, sleep and study - It's all I have time for.

For my Tuesday and Thursday morning training sessions I'm up at 4.30am and in the pool by 5.00am. Train till 7.00am then pop home for breakfast (two bowls of cereal, toast and a protein shake!) and then a quick 20 minute nap so I'm fresh before leaving for college.

It's a little bit frustrating that my only 9.00am classes at Woodhouse just happen to be on my morning training days but It could be worse, I can still fit it in, and the college have been very understanding and flexible about my swimming commitments.

My life has to be quite regimented. I get home from college, get something to eat, work for an hour and a half, then swim for two hours, get back, eat, and then work until bedtime. Somedays (especially double training days) it's hard to physically stay up - I'm so tired - so I have to use my free periods at college very wisely and get my homework and extra study done while I'm at college. I have to be very organised."

(Luca is quite modest here - in fact he has 100% attendance and his grades are high. His maths teacher Ms Finn commented that he has "...very effective study skills and an exemplary approach to the course".)

"It can be tough for my parents too, but they are very supportive. Obviously they don't love getting up at 4.30am and when I'm in the big competitions, someone has to accompany me to Glasgow or Sheffield or wherever, so there goes the weekend. My swimming does impact a lot on my family but hopefully it will pay off and I'm so grateful for their support."

Luca is obviously a very motivated young man and we salute his dedication to both his swimming and his studies. Keep it up Luca!
