Student of the Week

Louis Allen
Louis Allen
Louis came to Woodhouse from Broomfield School and is currently in his U6 year studying Music, Economics and PE. As his picture might suggest - Louis is a drummer, and he has come to our attention this week because he is performing his own composition at the Royal Albert Hall next week. But we'll tell you more about that further on, because Louis is more than just an amazing drummer - he is also an athlete...

Louis is a "Triple Jumper" and competes for Enfield and Haringey Athletics Club. He has competed nationally representing Middlesex at the English Schools Championship in 2013 and (between injuries!) also competes in the mens category.

Why Triple Jump?

"I just stumbled into it really..." - (not literally) - "But after just four months training I was competing and when I realised I was doing quite well in such a short space of time I decided - I need to pursue this."

In fact - Louis posted a 3rd best jump nationally for his age group and has a personal best of 13m 54cm.

"I want to compete internationally when I am older. I love the discipline that being a jumper has taught me and shown me how to go about achieving my goals and overcome adversity (...injuries). You examine, in detail, every aspect of you life - your nutrition, your training, your sleeping - and change and adapt whatever you need, to improve"

He's had offers to study Sports Science from a number of Universities (St Mary's, Nottingham, Kingston) but hopes to accept a place at Brunel. "I like the idea of studying all aspects of sports science- Biomechanics, Physiology, Psychology - and then deciding later where I want to focus."

And what about his drumming?

"I'm kind of split 50/50 between my love for Athletics and my love for music. I started out messing with keyboards when I was very young but discovered drumming when I was 9 or 10 and just got hooked.

I love performing with other musicians and feeding off of the energy we can all generate together. I play at church - my father is a pastor at Finchley Baptist Church - where we play some gospel and some african music and I adapt my drumming to suit those styles. You can see peoples faces change and light up with the different rhythms, its... uplifting... I really enjoy it.

I also like examining other aspects of music and I write album and gig reviews for a music blog - I'm really interested in the sociology of music and lyrics in HipHop and other styles."

Next week, Louis (along with other Woodhouse musicians and dancers) will be performing at the Royal Albert Hall as part of 'Play On' the Barnet Education Arts Trust Gala Concert. Louis (with the help of a few friends) will be performing his own coursework composition, based on a samba - and we hope to post a recording of his music very soon.

Music teacher Jayne Barnes is one of his most enthusiastic fans. She told us - "Louis is a very creative, hardworking and versatile musician and over the last two years has really gotten to grips with the academic harmonic language of music. I wish him the very best of luck with his performance at the Albert Hall next week"

And we wish you good luck too Louis, and thank you for your contribution to the lush soundtrack of Woodhouse life.
