Student of the Week
This week (the last SOTW this term) we are celebrating Kira who came to Woodhouse from Maria Fidelis Catholic School and lives in Islington. She is currently studying English literature, psychology, philosophy and classics.
Kira plans to go on to study law at university, hopefully at Nottingham...
"They want AAA* - which is seriously ridiculous!"
...but maybe at UCL.
Kira has just returned from a practice Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award expedition on the North Downs in Surrey.
"It was quite hard going. We walked about 27km on the first day, with very heavy packs and got lost quite a few times in dense woodland.
But the camping was fun and I love being outdoors. It was good to have a complete break from all the exam stress and college work.
I didn't really know anyone in my D of E group properly before, but having hiked, cooked, shared tents and spent time together we've all become good friends now. Its been great way to get to know people in a different environment.
I feel ready for the actual assessed expedition now and have learned some good lessons - like carry less clothes and more food!."
Over the past year, Kira has been an active and enthusiastic member of our charity fund raising committee for Educate For Change. EFC is a charity set up by Olivia Stanton (our geography teacher) to support orphans of HIV in Uganda by giving them access to education. It's a tiny charity that is making a big difference to the lives of around 150 vulnerable children.
The committee and Kira have come up with a number of initiatives this year culminating in Cultural Week where, among other things, they organised - a wear the colours of your flag day, a food market, a mixed netball competition and a movie night - all of which raised money for EFC.
"I have big plans for more fundraising in the next year too. We are hoping to team up with the EDucators (our equality and diversity group) and plan a really great week of events celebrating the college's diversity and culture. I want to expand on what we've achieved this year, bring more people to the group and raise more urgently need funds than ever for EFC"
Charity work is not new to Kira, she's been part of Global Generation (an environmental charity focusing on community) for around four years.
She also has two jobs. She works Schuh (a shoe shop in the west end "I get great discounts!") and, like many of our students, works for Explore Learning as a tutor to younger school children. She's also a bit of an entrepreneur and has dabbled with a cup cake business ("I handmade 200 Mickey Mouse cupcakes for a party!).
"I love taking advantage of opportunities when they arise, and that's where Woodhouse is great. There are so many things to get involved with, extra curricular things and visiting speakers to go and listen to. It's great. The only thing I think we need more of is perhaps a few purely social events like the movie night we had before, I hope we get a few more events like that, where you get to meet people you don't normally hang out with."
Well if anyone can make that happen we are sure that Kira will (and bring cakes too!).
We thank Kira for all the hard work she (and her fellow committee members) have put in to charity work this year and look forward to more of her endeavours across the next year.
